A Healthy Christian

 A Healthy Christian

By Dr. Phil Spears

In today’s world of fast-paced living, stress, and spiritual distractions, the idea of “health” often gets boxed into a narrow definition—usually around physical appearance or energy levels. But as a believer and someone who has spent decades studying both human behavior and the Christian walk, I’ve come to believe that true health—Christian health—is far more holistic.

A healthy Christian is not just someone who reads their Bible or eats a balanced diet. It's someone who integrates spiritual, emotional, physical, and relational well-being into a lifestyle that honors God.

1. Spiritual Health: Staying Anchored

A healthy Christian starts with a healthy soul. This doesn’t mean having all the answers or never doubting. It means staying anchored in Christ even when storms come. Regular prayer, time in the Word, and honest conversations with God are vital.

Ask yourself: Am I connected to the vine? (John 15:5). Because apart from that connection, everything else—our good intentions, our busyness, even our ministry—becomes dry and fruitless.

2. Emotional Health: Letting God Into the Inner World

We often pretend we’re fine when we’re not. But a healthy Christian doesn’t fake peace—they pursue it. They allow the Holy Spirit to shine a light into their emotional life: fears, frustrations, wounds, and all.

David was a man after God’s own heart, not because he was emotionally perfect, but because he brought his emotional mess to God without shame. That’s what we’re invited to do too.

3. Physical Health: Stewarding the Temple

Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). That truth isn’t about guilt—it’s about stewardship. A healthy Christian honors God with their body, not out of vanity, but out of gratitude. This could mean rest, nutrition, movement, or even seeking help when physical or mental health is suffering.

You don’t have to look like a fitness model. But are you caring for your body in a way that helps you serve God with strength?

4. Relational Health: Loving Like Jesus

Jesus said the world would know we are His by our love (John 13:35). That love begins at home—with our families, friends, church communities, even strangers. A healthy Christian doesn’t just “believe” in love—they live it.

This means setting boundaries where needed, extending forgiveness, seeking reconciliation, and being humble enough to ask for help or say “I was wrong.”

Final Thoughts

A healthy Christian isn’t perfect. They’re growing. They’re honest. They’re open to being transformed by grace, day by day.

If you feel out of balance in one or more of these areas, don’t get discouraged. That awareness is actually a gift—it’s the Holy Spirit calling you back to center.

Jesus didn’t come to make us superhuman. He came to make us whole.

Stay well, stay anchored, and keep walking.
